Russell Brand, Pied Piper of Hamelin, Imagine Children's Festival, Southbank Centre
Russell Brand reads from his hare-brained adaptation of the Pied Piper of Hamelin as part of the Southbank's Imagine Children's Festival, 2015.
Loud mouth presenter cum comedian Russell Brand has turned his talents to writing. His Trickster Tales are a re-writing of the fairy-tale canon, set to alter young people's perspectives, because, in Brand's own words, "once we start changing the way children see the world, oh we can do all sorts of stuff". Modern, funny, and certainly not saccharin, these are modern morals for modern children. With illustrations from renowned artist Chris Riddell the series also promises to pack an aesthetic punch.
The first of the series, Pied Piper of Hamelin, will be brought to full, rat-infested life by Brand and Riddell in a reading at the Southbank centre. The energy and exuberance for which Brand is known will be channelled into performative story-telling as he takes children along to Hamelin and reveals a land of rats, townspeople and one very special piper. Chris Riddell will add a flourish of visual excitement by creating live art on stage.
Expect a dynamic reading, as the whole family is whisked away by this very modern fairy tale. Suitable for ages 8+
