Paddington
Michael Bond's classical tale of 'A Bear called Paddington' comes to London cinemas November 2014
The well-loved story of a lost teddy bear from Peru, discovered in Paddington Station, comes to the silver screen in November. The animated adaptation of Michael Bond's children's series is likely to pull a few nostalgic heartstrings; 'A Bear Called Paddington', first penned in 1956, became an instant classic, invoking the fond imaginations of many a child towards many a lost bear. The books have now sold more than thirty-five million copies worldwide and have been translated into over forty languages.
The film, directed by Paul King, features a prominent cast including Ben Whishaw as the voice of the very English marmalade-loving Paddington, Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins as his loving and dysfunctional adopted family, and Peter Capaldi as unpleasant Notting Hill neighbour. Imelda Staunton voices the memorable Aunt Lucy, and Nicole Kidman brings up the rear as the wicked Millicent. We're unsure how King's contemporised adaptation will handle such a well-known English classic, but for children the notion of a favourite toy come-to-life is likely to be enchanting nonetheless.
