A weekend of hands-on animal activities and adventures all in honour of the zoo's most famous bear...
One hundred years ago a bear arrived at London Zoo. This was a very special bear -- she was mascot for the Canadian regiment and was brought all the way across the Atlantic ocean at the beginning of World War One -- and there were two visitors who thought she was a very special bear indeed. A little boy called Christopher Robin brought his dad to visit Winnie the bear so much that A. A. Milne decided to immortalise his son's furry friend...
To honour the centenary of Winnie's arrive London Zoo have created a special programme of activities themed around the beloved Winnie the Pooh books.
Along with all the usual excitements of the zoo, there's a Winnie exhibition, where fans of all ages can learn the fascinating history behind the honey-loving bear and discover the loveable creatures that still reside at the zoo, like spectaular Sumatran tiger Jae Jae, who's every bit as exciting as Tigger. For youngster who preferred Owl's sage wisdom to Winnie's bumbling charm, there are plenty of feathered friends to meet in the owlery. If you sympathise with Eeyore's pessimism, there are plenty of donkeys, though they're not quite as grumpy as A. A. Milne's. Or how about bouncing around with Kanga and little Roo?
For little adventurers there's a woodland walk with plenty of buzzy bugs and creepy crawlies that takes you through a delightful slice of rural wilderness in search of native creatures. When you're ready for some light entertainment there're games on the lawn to engage children of all ages. And don't worry about getting rumbly in your tumbly, as Pooh would say: there's heap of honey sandwiches and other tea party treats to be found at the Animal Cafe.
Last but not least, if the little ones have their own special bear, come with a teddy or two in tow for the Teddy Bears' Picnic, with prizes for the most adventurous and best travelled bear.
