Elephantom, New London Theatre
After a sell-out run at The National Theatre, the larger-than-life elephant puppets float across the West End stage in Ben Power's adaptation of Ross Collins's picture book
Using a cast of larger than life, baby blue puppets, the story of a phantom elephant is brought to life on stage. When a gigantic ghost surprises a lonely little girl, this cheeky new friend brings plenty of chaos -- from phantom channel changing to massive elephant poos -- luckily with a little help from her grandmother, and a whole menagerie of spectral pets, our plucky heroine finds a solution to all the mess that ensues.
Ben Power's adaptation of the family favourite picture book by Ross Collins is a very visual spectacle. The airy puppets (created by the team behind War Horse's Joey) fill the stage, and the story is propelled by gesture and expression, making it easy for even very little children to follow. Music and bright set and scenery add to the energy, as this show develops from a gentle portrayal of everyday family life, to a rollicking adventure bursting with silliness and magic. And through such formality there's a subtle portrayal of parents who are too preoccupied to notice even the most outrageous of events.
Recommended for age three and up.
