Farm Boy by Michael Morpurgo, Polka Theatre

For five days only, the airy Polka Theatre in Wimbledon is hosting a child-friendly adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's sequel to War Horse, the First World War story made internationally famous through its breathtaking West End incarnation and subsequent film.

Set 50 years after the young protagonist Albert and his beloved horse return from war-torn France, Farm Boy picks up the tale and offers a story of friendship in old age. Albert plays with his grandson, grappling with chickens, rusty tractors and the significance of a deep secret.

Rumour has it that Morpurgo was inspired to write a sequel to War Horse after receiving letters asking what happened to Joey, the plough horse-turned-army horse, following the end of the war. This Mercury Theatre Colchester production promises to tell a moving story about intergenerational love and how to connect with each other, all set in glorious landscapes.

Farm Boy is being brought to the stage by Mercury director Daniel Buckroyd, who has adapted several Morpurgo stories for the theatre, including The Butterfly Lion and Friend or Foe.
