Dido, Unicorn Theatre
English National Opera and Unicorn Theatre have joined forces on a contemporary staging of Purcell's Dido
Trying to introduce the classics to the next generation in a way that engages them and inspires them to learn more about the subject is every parent's dream, and children's theatre mecca Unicorn is always the go-to place for reimaginings of the stories we know and love, told in a modern way to inspire our children.
Their latest project, Dido, a collaboration with the English National Opera sung in English, is no exception. The first-ever collaboration between the two theatres puts Purcell's Dido and Aeneas in firmly modern territory as it tells us the story through the eyes of teenager Belinda, Dido's only child who watches her mum - a modern parent, heroine and feminist icon - slowly unravel.
The show, directed by Purni Morell, features three principals: Rachael Lloyd as Dido, Njabulo Madlala as Aeneas and Eyra Norman as Belinda, who perform with a chorus of 12 and seven musicians from the ENO orchestra, conducted by ENO Mackerras Conducting Fellow, Valentina Peleggi. The show remains faithful to its famous Baroque score, making it an exciting introduction to younger audiences and keeping a sense of familiarity for those who know and love the tragic tale. The production features sets designed by Khadija Raza, with lighting from David W Kidd.
The show is suitable for ages 11+ and runs approximately an hour and 15 minutes. And if the kids think opera's not for them - yet - tell them that Purcell originally composed the work for a girls' boarding school in 1689.
Please note: in this production, Dido's suicide will be presented onstage
