Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna
Cirque du Soleil presents Amaluna, its new show with plentiful costumes and acrobatics
Cirque du Soleil is back. Continuing its 20-year run of performances at the Royal Albert Hall, the company will present their latest show Amaluna. The show is written and directed by Tony Award-winning Diane Paulus, who cracks her whip as Cirque ringmaster for the first time with this production. Amaluna has proven popular outside of the UK and we reckon it's going to sell out pretty fast.
The show is set on a mysterious island governed by a sisterhood of goddesses. Prospera, their queen, is busy organising her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony that marks her transition to womanhood. This celebratory rite honours femininity, renewal and rebirth - bringing with it a feminist bent, encouraging critics to label the show a paragon of girl power.
Amaluna’s matriarchal community is disturbed when a group of young men arrive on the island, one of whom falls helplessly in love with Prospera’s daughter. Here begins a romance set to live music on a stage designed by Scott Pask that captures nature’s beauty.
