Cia Maduixa, DOT Review ★★★★★
A family-friendly show, DOT is a surprising kaleidoscope of a production now having its London premiere as part of Dance Umbrella 2017
Combining dance, theatre, music and technology, DOT, brought to London by Spain’s Cia Maduixa as part of Dance Umbrella 2017, acts as a magical puzzle in which anything and everything is possible.
The plot explores the friendship between a girl who is obsessed with keeping things neat and tidy and a boy who most definitely doesn’t share her interest in ensuring everything is just so. Laia (Laia Sorribes) is determined to erase stains from a white wall – until her newfound friend Dot (Ezequiel Gil) invites her to dream of turning that blank canvas into a brightly coloured work of art.
Laia and Dot embark on a mesmerising magical adventure where they explore the infinite possibilities provided by the white wall. The pair navigate a spider’s web, explore the constellations, and get blown away by a technicolour windstorm. The seamlessness between dance and technology gives the show the overall aesthetic of a colourful app or music video – it’s hard to believe it’s all happening live in front of your eyes. This enchanting performance is sure to settle even the most restless of young theatregoers.
Inspired by the pioneering conceptual work of the American artist Sol LeWitt, DOT combines audiovisual presentation with stunning choreography. The two Cia Maduixa performers move at the tempo and speed of the light, avoiding falling, perfectly in sync with the bespoke score that ranges from battling banjos to disco.
Its exceptional blend of precise digital projections, expressive contemporary dance and a unique score, has already garnered DOT many accolades for best children’s show throughout Europe.
Bravo, then, to Dance Umbrella for keeping younger dance fans in mind and giving Cia Maduixa and DOT a well-deserved London debut.
