Photographer Mark Neville is renowned for his socially-focused photojournalistic projects. He captures the humanity of lives in extremis, from war-zones, refugee camps or city-slums.
This February, Neville arrives at the Foundling Museum with an exploration of childhood, gleaned from previous projects as well as new work. It makes for a complex and comprehensive view of childhood the world-over, that is at once touching, uplifting and troubling. This is a grown-up exhibition with a social mission to which kids are welcome.
The exhibition presents a series of photographs of children at play in diverse environments around the world, in North London, wealthy Pittsburg and the war-savaged Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The collection includes photographs of internally displaced children in Ukraine; residents of Kakuma, Kenya’s second largest refugee camp; and depictions of children at play in London adventure playgrounds, all made especially for this project.
Neville captures beautiful moments of free, spontaneous play often framed in uncomfortable situations. We challenge you not to shed a tear at the juxtaposition of innocence and hardship.
