Play the Mile, Culture Mile
Meet the new musical instrument – your phone. Download an app, and there are 10 new pieces to hear, at 10 landmarks in and around the Barbican
New music is yours in a couple of clicks, with 10 new pieces composed specifically for 10 Culture Mile locations in and around the Barbican.
Culture Mile has commissioned Musicity to create the 10 new architecture-inspired music tracks and VR video-art pieces using spaces across the area. Musicity x Culture Mile launches at Sound Unbound on 18/19 May.
From that weekend, any time of day or night until 25 August, as long as you have the app to hand, you can hear the pieces performed by contemporary artists at hubs that include nightclub Fabric, Barbican Sculpture Garden, and the new Museum of London site in Spitalfields.
Composers and performers include sound artist Kassia Flux, who can be heard within yards of St Bartholomew the Great, and Fari Bradley, whose chorally-inspired piece is audible around Charterhouse Chapel.
All you have to do is turn up at the site, and the music is yours to enjoy. It sounds like a great way to get technically-minded youngsters into new music too.
'It's like Pokemon Go but with a bit more cultural value!' says broadcaster Nick Luscombe, who has masterminded this Musicity event.
