The Game is Now: Sherlock Escape Room, London review

Everyone loves playing detective. It's why there are so many different Escape Rooms in London, inviting us to uncover clues and sleuth our way out before time runs out.

The newest offering is a big-budget immersive experience from the creators of the BBC's hit Sherlock series. The Game is Now escape room channels Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss's slick contemporary version of Arthur Conan Doyle's detective series. With the help of Gatiss and Moffat's story-telling, sets crafted by the Sherlock series production company and expertise from escape room veterans Time Run, the experience is impressively authentic and puzzling.

Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds

Immersive theatre company dotdotdot return to London with a new experience based on the best-selling album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds. Audiences will be transported to Victorian England, as depicted by H. G. Wells in cult sci-fi novel The War of the Worlds; for 90 minutes, normal life will be replaced with the chaos of martian invasion.

Spy City, Colab Theatre

Colab Theatre go one step further in their pursuit of immersive theatre, seeking complete equality between actors and audience members in the creation of this spy themed show. The audience are characters as much as the cast and the fourth wall is a distant memory in this intensely interactive finale to their spy thriller series. Secret Cinema have announced that Casino Royale will be the next film to take centre stage in a night of mystery and martinis.The 2006 film seems like the perfect choice, as the adaptation of Ian Fleming's first ever James Bond story is packed with high-stakes drama to please both critics and fans.

Havana Moon, Rolling Stones immersive concert screening

The Rolling Stones' free 2016 concert in Havana, Cuba was as much a gig as a historic event. The group themselves called it 'landmark' and it was attended by a crowd of 500, 000. Lucky for those of us who weren't among them, the concert is being revived this summer at a fantastical screening that involves live dancers and actors as well as state-of-the-art sound and visuals to give a richly mesmeric sense of the night as it was.

Secret Cinema presents Stranger Things

Secret Cinema is back and better than ever with its first TV screening, in collaboration with Netlix, set to be their most immersive experience yet. 80s pop culture met supernatural spooks in the hugely popular Stranger Things and now both can meet you in a top secret London location, amid themed cocktails, fancy dress and dazzling set pieces. The Secret Cinema format evolves with this foray in to TV, as the company bursts the bounds of immersive theatre to fit three seasons of your favourite moments in to one night.

Mamma Mia! The Party

The world of Mamma Mia! delighted yet another set of viewers over the summer with the release of Here We Go Again. Now, that world will be recreated in none other than London’s vast O2 arena. Adapted by Sandy Toksvig, Mamma Mia! The Party invites participants to step into an island paradise, eat top-notch Mediterranean food and listen to live performances of all the best ABBA numbers. Audiences in Stockholm have been raving about this experience.

The Swell Mob, COLAB Factory

The Swell Mob, an ‘explosive immersive theatrical experience’, invites audience members to dress up and enter the hedonistic world of a 19th century taproom for an evening of debauched fun. Guests are invited to dance, drink, sing and gamble with a motley crew of characters straight out of the Victorian underworld.

The Jewel of the Empire, Pedley Street Station

Funicular Productions take guests back to 1937 for the night and invites them on board the Murdér Express, a lovingly detailed colonial era train. As the thinly disguised name implies, this is to be the setting of a daftly funny murder mystery with a strong slapstick streak. All this unfolds around, among and along with the audience in a highly immersive dining experience, while they tuck in to a four course meal created by Masterchef Professionals 2018 winner, Laurence Henry.

The Big London Bake, 38 Tooting High Street

Soggy bottoms nowhere in sight? Reckon your trifle is boozy enough for Mary Berry? A decidedly different immersive experience comes to London this summer in the form of the Big London Bake, where you can participate in your own bake-off styled competition, complete with a look alike marquee sure to fire up anyone's competitive side. Excellent attention to detail (even the kitchen surfaces are the same) makes competitors report they felt they could almost be on the show. Ready, steady, bake!

Immersive cocktail experiences by Inventive Productions

Inventive Productions prove aptly named in these immersive cocktail experiences which vary wildly in theme but are akin in their fascination with the marginal and the mischievous: pirates, prisoners and outlaws respectively form the context for their three venues. Part theatrical production, part bar, part escape room, these events ask guests to bring a bottle of their booze of choice, from which the mixologists will concoct various interesting cocktails over the course of the night.
