Luca Silvestrini, En Route to Common Ground, Woolwich

Luca Silvestrini is one of the most inventive creator of hybrid performances currently working in the UK. With En Route to Common Ground he invites you to join his company, Protein, in a collective journey from Woolwich Common to Royal Arsenal Riverside, accompanied along the way by dance, live music and storytelling.

Part of this year's vibrant Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, the show returns after a very successful run last year. Like on its first outing, the route follows some of the most typical streets and public spaces of Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. At intervals dancers and musicians will unexpectedly pop up, putting on performances set against and interacting with the surroundings and landscapes of the route.

As well, groups of local community organisations, who played a part in the genesis of the promenade, will perform along the way, creating what Silvestrini calls 'an opportunity to experience connectivity.'

Should you wish to join, do wear sensible shoes: although the pace is leisurely, you will be covering some 4.5 km over about three hours. Audiences will meet at Woolwich Common and be guided in small groups by a performer. As they continue their journeys, the groups and performers meet and merge, before finally converging on Royal Arsenal Riverside for what is billed as 'a joyful celebration.'

Fans of Luca Silvestrini, among whom Culture Whisper counts itself, will look forward to yet another of his joyful creations. We have fond memories of Protein's work, most particularly the company's lively and endearing dance-theatre adaptation of Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince.
