Mighty Hoopla Festival, Brockwell Park
A portal to the poptastic pastures of the past: Mighty Hoopla returns for 2022, with throwback acts Sugababes, Steps and Anastacia performing
Festival season is upon us and to kick things off in style, Brockwell Park presents the 2022 edition of its burgeoning pop extravaganza, Mighty Hoopla.
Glitter bombing the Jubilee bank holiday, Mighty Hoopla is spread over two days this year, with more than 25,000 festival-goers expected to descend on Brockwell Park for 'music, fun and fashion', and above all, a celebration of 'freedom and expressionism'.
Reviving the very best of 90s and 00s pop is a stellar line-up of acts. Get ready to 5,6,7,8 as Friday's headliner Steps come boot scootin' their way onto the main stage to perform intensely choreographed favourites from their back catalogue.
Taking the reins on Saturday are the Sugababes – in their OG formation (Siobhan, Mutya and Keisha – duh!). The girl group burst onto the music scene at the turn of the century (when they were just 15/16 years old!) with 'Overload', and went on to release six number one singles and multiple platinum albums.
Steps
Elsewhere, 00s dance trio Cascada will be reminding everyone to Evacuate the Dance Floor, and Friday's special guest Anastacia will have her audience belting out the chorus to 'I'm Outta Love'.
Lacing the nostalgia fest with contemporary flare is Jessie Ware, whose fourth album What's your Pleasure was a musical highlight of lockdown. Equally tantalising is the prospect of bopping along to the feminist home truths of 2021 breakthrough artist Self Esteem, whose brilliantly reflective hit 'I Do This All The Time', with its message of self love, slots in seamlessly with Mighty Hoopla's ethos.
In between catching your favourite big-name acts, rave it up at the festival's own club sessions, hosted by inclusive party collectives including Sink the Pink, The Cocoa Butter Club, Guilty Pleasures and more.
Join the celebrations as south-east London gets hyped for a joyous day of laughter, glitter and music.
