The beginning of December sees the veteran diva Jocelyn Brown descend on Camden’s beloved Jazz Café for three consecutive nights of acid jazz, dance and soul. This North Carolina-turned-London resident has expressed adoration for this venue, repeatedly choosing it for her tours. Combined with the intimate nature of the place, this is sure to be a show featuring an artist firmly at home.
Before being able to afford London rent however, Brown Started in 1970s Kinston, singing as a sessionist for a range of studio bands. She was soon singing with such stars as Chic Musique, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Quincy Jones and John Lennon to name but a few. The jewel in the crown in her solo career then occurred in 1984 with the release of her chart-topping Somebody Else’s Guy, a vinyl that Radio Station Heart 106.2 has since refused to throw away. And how about Snap’s eternal hook 'I’ve got the power?' Yep, that’s her too, granting her voice an immediate familiarity world-over, despite its anonymity.
What’s for sure is that Brown will be anything by anonymous at the Jazz Café, belting through a catalogue of soulful hits in this cross-genre, homely and much-loved venue.
