Need some cheering up? Pillars of the American funk and soul revival, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are coming to the Roundhouse in May. Their sound is thoroughly retro, but completely authentic. Expect a foot-tapping, finger clicking collision of sixties soul and seventies disco.
Led by the impossibly charismatic 57 year-old vocalist Sharon Jones the band creates a rhythmic and irresistible funky cocktail.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Jones was engrossed in 70s disco when she made the move to Brooklyn. The industry came knocking, but she had to wait: it wasn’t until years after giving up her dream of being a recording artist that she was picked up by a record label, and not until 2002 that she released her first full-length album with the Dap-Kings. Hailed as the queen of funk, Jones has authentic diva soul, recalling Tina Turner and Diana Ross.
Their newly-released sixth album, Give The People What They Want is an exercise in funk-soul concoction: sunny arrangements, jazzy instrumentals and powerhouse vocals - have a listen to Retreat ! and get in the mood.
