ESKA, Roundhouse
Head to the Roundhouse for eclectic mastery courtesy of ESKA
They say good things come to those who wait: an adage
which has rarely rung truer than in the case of Eska Mtungwazi. The south
Londoner has been on the music scene for years; from Graces Jones to the
Cinematic Orchestra, her list of collaboration credits is impressive to say the
least. But instead of rushing into releasing an album, she bade her time,
finally releasing her self-titled debut last year.
ESKA is a beguiling listen, echoing with old school jazz grooves, soulful high notes, and Fairport style folk. Instrumentally, it’s a hugely varied affair; water-filled bottles, the glockenspiel and even tubular bells are all in the mix. Clearly much thought has gone into the record, and thankfully much feeling too. In the way of Bjork or Kate Bush, Eska’s eclecticism never feels contrived or shallow.
ESKA was due to play KOKO on March 31, but the show has since been rescheduled. It’s now set to take place at the Roundhouse on August 8.
