Floating Points, Electric Brixton

A gifted producer and multi-instrumentalist, Floating Points comes to Electric Brixton

Floating Points, or Sam Shepherd as his birth certificate has it, is at the bleeding edge of electronic music. A classically trained pianist, wunderkind producer (and neuroscience PhD to boot), his compositions reveal a genuinely experimental turn of mind. From early 20th Century classicism to spiritual jazz to Berlin techno, disparate influences collide in enrapturing combination. On paper, this could smack of self-congratulatory eclecticism. In audio, it’s totally convincing.

Shepherd’s first full length album Elaenia was released on November 6. Working with an eccentric cast of musicians, the kind that includes a dance-pop drummer and an orchestral violinist, the result is an exquisitely rich piece of music, and – that rarest of things – a fully realised album. You can't help but get caught up in its detailed tapestry, swept along by shuffling techno rhythms unfurling into jazz drum lines, and cyborg bleeps building into sweeping string arrangements.

Floating Points plays Electric Brixton on February 10, with a second date now added on the 11th. Having already sold out Islington Assembly Hall, it’s likely that these will go the same way.
