Grimes, O2 Academy Brixton
Grimes' Art Angels is one of this year's most eagerly awaited albums. She plays O2 Academy Brixton on March 10
Grimes takes a decidedly DIY approach to pop music. Her
breakthrough album Visions was
recorded at home, on Apple’s pre-loaded music-making software, during a three week period of
intense reclusion. The result was one of 2012’s most critically adored albums:
a fifty minute blend of sci-fi synthesisers and vocals pitched at
helium-induced levels.
A musician known for her keen visual eye, Grimes complemented Visions' candied ghostliness with some of the most memorable music videos of recent times. ‘Oblivion’, which she both starred in and co-directed, takes the floodlit half-light of the sports stadium as its backdrop. The motocross derby and American football match become surreal phantasms through which the artist wanders with otherworldly poise.
Her 2014 single ‘Go’ met with rather more mixed reviews, with some fans taking against its club-ready bombast. A few months later, Grimes announced that she was scrapping her new album entirely. Anticipation was high then for Art Angels, Grimes' newest release, and it certainly hasn't disappointed. A gloriously off-kilter pop record, it's baffling, copious and one of this year's most completely disorienting listens.
With so much hype surrounding this record, make sure to book your ticket for Grimes' March 10 performance at the O2 Academy Brixton.
