Yuck first came to many an indie fan's attention in 2010 as part of a collective nostalgia for the 90s shoe gaze aesthetic (Think My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth) that seemed to be sweeping across the indie soundscape. Lo-fi sounds suddenly abounded, with bands favouring distorted guitar melodies and indecipherable lyrics. Of that mini phenomenon, Yuck are the only band who have successfully managed to stick around long enough to release a second album, Glow & Behold .
Formed from the indie rock ashes of teen band Cajun Dance Party, Max Bloom and Daniel Blumberg began writing songs that would then form part of Yuck’s eponymous debut album, released in the summer of 2011 to critical success. Some lauded their unadulterated homage to shoegaze sounds, Yuck by and large rose above their influences to create a record that was both diverse and refreshing in equal measure.
Glow & Behold, as with all good sophmore albums, showcases a step forward in Yuck’s musical oeuvre. It has a more mature approach paying immediate dividends to any critics waiting to criticise them for lack of originality. On Glow & Behold, they mix their signature ruminative style with one that is now both catchy and anthemic. This, in turn, has translated into a rousing live performance- don't miss out!
