Kylie, Grace Jones, Chic and More, Hyde Park
Taylor Swift, Paul Weller and Ellie Goulding have already been announced. The latest to join the BST 2015 lineup is Kylie Minogue: Hyde Park to host the Aussie pop princess, along with Grace Jones.
Crave a day of music in a field, but disinclined to camp out in a muddy festival. Rejoice! The Barclaycard British Summer Time, always some of the best London events, is back for another Hyde Park weekend. After a rock-fuelled opening night and a centerpiece of pop perfection, this year’s final celebration has set its eyes on the dance floor. Kylie Minogue will headline, supported by special guests Grace Jones and Chic. Although there are still more acts to be announced, the trio thus far assembled could each carry an entire day of music themselves.
Kylie Minogue: Neighbours to Popstardom
Transcending her improbable origins on the Australian soap Neighbours, Kylie Minogue has become a world-conquering empress of pop. From the 80s bubblegum of ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, through the 90s indie dabbling of ‘Confide in Me’ through to ‘Spinning Around’ and ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ in the twenty-first century, she boasts a rich collection of foot-moving floor fillers. But it’s arguably her two special guests who will be an even greater attraction.
Grace Jones 2015: no signs of slowing down age 66
Grace Jones is one of pop’s great eccentrics. With her distinctive androgynous style and willingness to experiment, she has managed the rare trick of being both creatively vital and a commercial success. Her nigh-operatic voice range is amongst the most remarkable in the business. Expect famous cover versions like ‘Nightclubbing’ and ‘Love Is The Drug’ alongside irresistible originals such as ‘Pull Up to the Bumper’ and the iconic ‘Slave to the Rhythm.’
Nils Rodgers and Chic: Disco
It is Nils Rodgers and Chic that promise to bring the party hardest, however. Through their unrivalled run in the late 70s and early 80s, they created a distinctly slick brand of disco that still sounds fresh today. Solid gold hits like ‘Good Times’, ‘Everybody Dance’ and ‘I Want Your Love’ are only part of the story – there all also melancholic gems like ‘Falling In Love With You’ and percussive jams like ‘My Feet Keep Dancing.’ And if recent setlists are any indication, they’ll also perform classics from Rodgers’ unsurpassed production history – from stellar albums by Sister Sledge and Diana Ross to songs for Bowie, Madonna and Duran Duran, all the way Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky.’ Few artists can boast such a storied back catalogue.
