Nils Frahm: Possibly Colliding, Barbican

In 2009, German composer and pianist Nils Frahm released an EP appropriately entitled Wintermusik, his first for the Erased Tapes label. Interlacing delicate piano and dampened accordion, Frahm crafted a graceful and moving record, a kind of auditory snow fall. On subsequent albums he has developed this aesthetic, imbuing glacial soundscapes with startling human warmth. But Frahm is by no means an artist content to rest on his laurels. He recorded his 2013 album Spaces live, capturing the spontaneity of performance on wittily titled tracks like ‘Improvisations for Coughs and a Cell Phone.’

This year, Frahm is curating The Barbican Centre's Marathon weekend 'Possibly Colliding.' Speaking to BBC Radio 6 music, he announced his intention to 'surprise people in the best possible way,' and with such an eclectic line-up, he's already half way there. As well as a special performance from Frahm and guests, there's music from the likes of contemporary organ master Anna Von Hausswolff, percussive pioneers Wildbirds & Peacedrums, the venerable Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and plenty more besides.

There'll also be an installation courtesy of digitial craft studio FELD, and a series of film screenings. We're particularly excited about 'Victoria,' Sebastien Schipper's chilling one-take feature set over a night in Berlin, dramatically scored by none other than Frahm himself.
