Wayne Shorter's album Speak No Evil will be the choice for the Played Twice series' second event
An evening of blistering live jazz and analogue geekery, Played Twice is an ingenious new event dreamed up by the team at Brilliant Corners in Dalston. First off, a landmark jazz album is played over the venue’s top of the range audiophile sound system, then a band made up of leading London jazzers reworks and reinterprets the album live on stage. Get excited for one of the best live jazz events in London this month.
Back in September, seminal Ornette Coleman recording The Shape of Jazz to Come had the Played Twice treatment and now, for the second event in the series, that honour goes to Speak No Evil, a 1964 album by legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter, widely regarded to be one of the finest of his career, not to mention one of Blue Note Records’ standout releases. Incorporating elements from hard bop and harmonically static modal jazz, Speak… played a pivotal role in shaping Shorter’s distinctive sound and features many of his most enduring compositions, including Witch Hunt, Dance Cadaverous and Infant Eyes.
Brilliant Corners have secured a 180g remastered vinyl pressing of the record, taken from the original studio tapes, promising a richly detailed playthrough before they hand things over to the musicians. Taking on the roll of Shorter (no pressure) is multi award-winning tenor sax player Tony Kofi, with star jazz and session trumpeter Quentin Collins, pianist Jim Watson (Manu Katche), drummer Enzo Zirilli (Enrico Pieranunzi) and bassist Mark Lewandowski playing the parts of jazz legends Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones and Ron Carter.
