Charlatans, The Roundhouse
Of all concerts in London 2015, this upcoming gig from 90s rockers The Charlatans will induce serious Madchester nostalgia
The Charlatans were a cornerstone of the throbbing Madchester scene; that definitively 90s concoction of indie and acid-house. Ecstasy-powered, euphoric and tinged greenly with anxiety, the scene roosted in Manchester’s Hacienda club and gave the world acts such as The Happy Mondays and Stone Roses.
Since rising to fame in the early 90s, the Charlatans have enjoyed a consistent under-the-radar success quite apart from the explosive boom-and-bust of more famous counterparts like Oasis and The Stone Roses. Continuing to turn out soul and R&B flavoured indie rock since their 1990 debut LP, Some Friendly.
Overcoming the dismal flop of their second release and the deaths of two of their original line-up, including the loss of drummer Jon Burgess last year, The Charlatans have earned a career-long reputation as survivors, Even today, despite no longer hoping to compete for chart placements in a markedly different musical landscape to that into which they first started out, continue to enjoy their quiet longevity.
They will be touring the UK early next year in support of a forthcoming new album, Modern Nature, their first since 2010's Who We Touch and, remarkably, their 12th in total. Their tour kicked off just recently with warm-up gigs in Islington, with the set list a well-judged mix of new material, howling classics such as 'Weirdo' and 'North Country Boy' and their later, softer, more electronic-influenced tunes.
As well as contributions from temporary additions Pete Salisbury of the Verve, and New Order's Stephen Morris, Modern Nature will feature drumming already recorded by the late Jon Burgess, so you can be sure that this tour will be an emotional experience for the band, and a memorable return to the road.
