A re-imagining of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme
Rowland Sutherland brings a re-imagining of John Coltraine's Love Supreme to Union Chapel
In a single studio session in New Jersey on December 9th 1964, John Coltrane and his quartet recorded what has become one of jazz's towering classics, a record enshrined forever in the Smithsonian's collection of 'Treasures of American History'.
A Love Supreme is simultaneously a deeply personal expression of Coltrane's faith and gratitude toward the higher power that he considered the source of his prodigious talent, and a hugely popular bestseller which shattered sales records (selling nearly 20 times as many as the majority of Coltrane's previous releases) and has been cited by artists as varied as Santana, Bono and The Divine Comedy as a guiding influence upon their work.
Exactly 50 years later, this December 9th, Rowland Sutherland's inventive re-imagining of the album will come to the Union Chapel, Islington, reconstructing the album across a wealth of instruments beyond the original recording and bringing together jazz traditions from across the world to create a performance that both pays homage to the original, and bounds away from it with joyful ease, embracing Indian percussion, kora melodies, vocal chanting and modern scat, and veering into swing and funk along the way.
Few places in London could be quite so fitting for a devotional work like this as the beautiful surroundings of Union Chapel, and this show will undoubtedly be a must-see tribute to one of the pre-eminent fixtures of the jazz canon.
