One of the highlights of Ronnie Scott’s 2016 programme, the New York-based Mingus Big Band play two shows a night for six nights.
Dedicated to preserving the musical legacy of legendary bassist Charles Mingus, among the most distinctive and influential composers in the history of jazz, the 14 piece ensemble, under the direction of Mingus’ window Sue, draw on the entirety of his back catalogue when designing their sets.
Yet, unlike so many legacy orchestras, they’re aren’t content to settle for a rehash. On the contrary, they excel at keeping the bassist’s repertoire fresh, with tumultuous renditions of classics like Moanin’, Fables of Faubus and Haitian Fight Song that sound as soulful and boisterous today as they did when Mingus first flung the weight of his bass behind them.
Loose, headstrong and unpredictable, contrasting passages of introspection with episodes of barely restrained chaos, this approach makes for thrilling ensemble playing. It has won the group numerous critical plaudits and awards, including a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album following for their 2010 release Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard.
