An Intimate Evening with Art Garfunkel, Southbank Centre
An evening with the legendary singer Art Garfunkel at the Southbank Centre as he returns for his first official tour since 2010.
Art Garfunkel returns to the UK stage at the Southbank Centre this September in his first official tour since 2010.
Garfunkel’s career has spanned six decades since his debut as part of the cherished and hugely successful folk duo Simon and Garfunkel. The pair became one of the defining groups of the 1960s with numerous songs including The Sound of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water finding international chart success.
They came to prominence out of the Greenwich Village folk music scene in New York in the 1960s. Vocal harmonies and Garfunkel’s soaring delivery were trademarks of a sound that grew from nascent folk-rock to a synthesis of a diversity of gospel and latin elements.
Since being diagnosed with a vocal cord ailment Garfunkel has been on hiatus from performance, but the singer’s famously angelic voice has now returned to its full strength and the New Yorker is excited to return to the stage.
Renowned for his powerful and emotive singing, Garfunkel has an impressively varied oeuvre. From the delicate harmonies of his early folk work with Simon and Garfunkel, to his interpretations of standards from the Great American Songbook from his most recent release- 2007’s Some Enchanted Evening- he enlivens every song with the rich timbre of his voice. As a solo artist, Garfunkel has found both critical and commercial success with the release of ten studio albums. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with his musical partner Paul Simon, in 1990.
His September performance at the Southbank Centre marks the final date of the UK leg of the tour. It should be a triumphant send-off from a true musical legend.
