It doesn’t take any great leap of the imagination to figure out why Laura Jansen’s debut album is called Bells : her voice is strong and clear. It hits all the notes just so. The Dutch-American ’s pure, crystalline delivery has made her popular in the Netherlands, Germany, and China. Ever since her delicate cover of the Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody, she’s been getting big in the States. On December 4, Jansen comes to Bush Hall, where she’ll audition her piano-driven alt-pop to English audiences. Jansen is a careful, deliberate artist. Her most recent album Elba (released in July) was produced by Matt Hales, who has worked with songbirds Lianne La Havas and D iane Birch . It explores the liminal mental space she occupies as a dual-nationality musician who is constantly on tour. (The album’s title refers to the Italian island Napoleon was exiled to after his abdication.) Jansen has a fine ear and a nice lyrical touch. On A Call to Arms, she pleads, “This is a call to arms, will you embrace me? Before it’s too late, baby?” Yes, yes we will.
