Goat, Roundhouse

The members of Goat are from a tiny, far-away village in northern Sweden called Korpilombolo, but they’re bringing their acid rock act to to the Roundhouse on October 3 in what could very well be one of the grooviest shows of the year.

The seven-strong Swedish collective, currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album, with quite a backstory. The inhabitants of Korpilombolo (a town unknown to Google Earth: we tried) are practitioners of voodoo and have been ever since a nomadic witch doctor settled there centuries ago. The heathen ways of these voodoo worshipers irritated the Church, which called on the Crusaders to stamp them out. In retaliation, those who survived the Church’s persecution laid a curse over the town, one which, to this day, haunts Korpilombolo’s villagers and Goat ’s music.

It’s an imaginative tale; we have a nagging feeling the band-members may have been smoking too much peyote when they came up with it. But word on the street is these exotic masked musicians put as much creative effort into their shows as they do their backstory. And if their Roundhouse gig is as good as their 2012 debut album World Music, or their KOKO gig last year it could very well be the stuff of legend.

As the name suggests, World Music is a soupy mix of everything from German kraut-rockers Can to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Frilly rhythm guitars, psychedelic squalls from the lead, all kept in check by those bongos... It’s a headbanger of a freak-out fest, sure to get you busting some moves. But if you needed any more convincing, check out Let It Bleed. It will make you giddy with joy.
