The Undertones, Koko

With their jubilant 1979 anthem ‘Teenage Kicks’, Irish punk outfit The Undertones bottled forever the stomach-flipping thrill of being 16. No longer teenage, the boys are very much alive and kicking - and they’re playing Koko on May 23

The most successful band to have emerged from Northern Ireland’s Derry, they’ve gone down in history for their enthusiastic and infectious sound, noising off on the perils of youth. Their 1999 reformation might have replaced Feargal Sharkey’s signature wavering vocals with Paul McLoone's, but their punk energy remains and they’ll grace the stage sweaty and over-excited as ever.

As well as the iconic Teenage Kicks you’ll hear the teen-punk anthems 'Here Comes The Summer' and 'My Perfect Cousin'. Their more recent output has met with an approving nod from their long-time fans, too. 2007’s ‘Here Comes The Rain’ is a particular highlight and has featured in their live shows since they played Glasto in 2005.

You’ll leave a little sweaty, with a smile on your face, a hoarse voice from half-shouting half-singing. Legendary DJ John Peel loved them so much he requested ‘Teenage dreams, so hard to beat’ immortalised on his gravestone. If you want to take anyone’s word for it, take John Peel’s.
