John Cooper Clarke, Alexandra Palace

Poetry in motion, the work of Dr John Cooper Clarke has found its audience and is coming to shake them to their core in person, at Alexandra Palace this November.

You can sway in the audience to the crooning bars of 'I Wanna Be Yours', or match the lipsync to recite Clarke's own words back to him – he's a performance poet who has become known as a 'punk poet' for his provocative and deeply elegiac musings.

At this point in his career, Clarke is touring to promote his newest collection that comes at a 'Best Of' sort of moment. The book and the tour are named 'The Luckiest Guy Alive', and there is a certain level of self-awareness of how the artist has to sell merchandise to keep afloat.

The 'Bard of Salford', as he's called, has been tracing his own path for decades – and has earned a fanbase that will now flock to hear every detail of his monologuing ramblings, sometimes to music, sometimes a capella.

Clarke's work has been admired and even adopted by artists and young, hungry fans around the world. His poem 'I Wanna Be Yours' was adapted for Arctic Monkeys' studio album AM, 'Evidently Chickentown' featured in the penultimate episode of The Sopranos, and now his poems feature on the GCSE syllabus.
