James Blake, Hammersmith Apollo
Following the release of his new album The Colour in Anything, James Blake plays Hammersmith Apollo
It’s easy to recognise a James Blake song; tremulous vocals, mournful refrains, roomy electronic productions and some ineffable magic that elevates his music far above the mediocrity that this recipe could make for.
Blake is one to fine-tune rather than revolutionise his sound. In May of this year, after picking up a credit on Beyoncé’s Lemonade, he returned with The Colour in Anything. This is the sound of a man mastering his craft; each echo is carefully orchestrated, each faltering vocal line modulated to perfection.
This could all sound rather cool and calculated, but Blake’s too talented for that. This is an album about the fragility of relationships, reverberating with regret. Hear him play live on Hammersmith Apollo on November 1.
