Childish Gambino, The O2, London 2019
The most provocative man in pop brings hard-hitting hits to London's O2 arena
In 2018 Childish Gambino ended his musical hiatus with the most shocking of sounds: a gunshot. In the opening scene to This Is America, he dances manically through an empty warehouse before turning suddenly to fire at a man sat on a cheap red office chair. It's an impressively bold (albeit disturbing) statement, which sets the tone for a polemic on racism and gun crime in modern America.
But Childish Gambino, the rap alter ego of actor/writer/musician Donald Glover goes beyond bold viral music videos. Live performances are typically bombastic. 2016's PHAROS tour was a feverish feat of immersion, where the ceiling was a-glow stars and selfies were banned to ensure no tech distracted from Childish Gambino in neon tribal paint.
The upcoming London gig sold out swiftly, prompting an extra date on 25 March 2019 due to extra demand.
Fans can also look forward to the more synth-heavy and radio friendly style of his previous records. From the glossy passion of 'V. 3005' to funk-laden falsetto of 'Redbone', the rapper will be sure to cover enough of his ever-expanding body of work to suit most musical tastes.
This breadth is also reflected in the huge number of projects that Donald Glover (i.e. the man behind the swaggering alter ego) has taken on recently. He's directed and acted in the award-winning comedy series, Atlanta, starred as Lando Calrissian in the space-age spaghetti western, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and has even been confirmed as the voice of Simba in the new Lion King remake. In fact, Glover was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world – and given how many disciplines he's conquered in his time, the accolade is very well earned.
With the performer hinting that he might kill off Childish Gambino soon, this could be the last chance to catch him live. And, if the daring of This Is America is anything to go by, he's likely to go out with the loudest bang possible.
