The Dusty Knuckle, Dalston
This Hackney bakery produces knockout sourdough and vibrant lunches, while helping to tackle youth unemployment
Founded by childhood friends Max and Rebecca in 2014, The Dusty Knuckle Bakery has grown from humble beginnings in a shipping container in Hackney to a permanent space with a cafe, too. As well as serving some spectacularly good bread, The Dusty Knuckle Bakery aims to make a difference in the local community. Through work experience and educational cooking classes, the bakery offers a way for young people to develop their technical and social skills.
'Only with genuine employment opportunities can we alter the mindset of those young people who may otherwise feel they have nothing to lose by pursuing criminality', Max explains.
As well as selling whole loaves (we recommend the white potato sourdough), cakes and pastries, the café also serves up breakfast and lunch six days a week. Expect delights like roasted pumpkin soup and imaginative sandwich fillings such as roasted spiced cauliflower, tahini and soft boiled egg.
