Mamie's, Covent Garden

Mamie's crêperie serves up exquisite savoury and sweet pancakes, from childhood favourites like lemon and sugar to more sophisticated combinations

Mamie's crêperie, Covent Garden
Why should we only eat pancakes one day per year? Mamie's in Covent Garden serves traditional Breton galettes and crêpes every day, so you no longer have to wait until Shrove Tuesday to indulge in a stack. Its effortlessly chic two-floor restaurant encourages pancake lovers to sit in, too, rather than grab and go – a style typically associated with crêperies.

The savoury galette menu ranges from a traditional ham, egg and emmental version, to the suitably elaborate La Baudelaire: smoked salmon, egg, lemon-flavoured cream cheese, pickled onions, tomatoes, salad, pink peppercorns and herbs. When it comes to the crêpes, similarly, diners can have them as simple or as complicated as they wish. Make them sweet like Magritte and pile on home-cooked apples, salted caramel, vanilla ice cream and almonds, or perhaps the fiery La Jeanne D'Arc is more up your street: bitter orange jam, lemon and lime sorbet and flambée mandarine imperial.

Downstairs in the cellar, there's a secret cider bar that serves an impressive selection of French variations: whether your palate prefers dry, sweet, fruity, or even in the form of a cocktail.
