Voodoo Blues, The Wandering Chef

The Wandering Chef comprises an intrepid duo: Lalie Jacout and Jamie Hazeel, who met in the Swiss mountains five years ago and have worked together ever since.  Inspired by a love of travel and adventure, there’s little this couple won’t take on.

The pairing of cook (Jamie) and creative director, or ‘Mistress of Festivities’, (Lalie) gives The Wandering Chef an advantage over the pop-up competition: are their productions dinners or immersive shows?

Their latest voyage is Voodoo Blues, combining theatrical design and decadent debauchery to bring the spooky spirit of the Deep South to life. Held at the Roxx club off Oxford Street, the unlikely location is a perfect setting for this dark and stormy event, dressed with moody lighting and garish neon, alongside taxidermy and yucky things in jars.

First up is a pickleback shot (not for the faint of heart) and a spicy whiskey cocktail before the seven-course feast begins. Boy, will you be well fed. From wedge salads with buttermilk dressing and smoky pork to soft shell crab sliders and house-made fried chicken with a spiked Cajun remoulade salad, the food is some of the best we’ve tasted at any pop-up – all served to a live New Orleans-inspired dirty blues band soundtrack. And, there’s plenty of it, which means no awkward glances across the sharing platters. However, that’s not to say there won’t be any red-faces at Voodoo Blues…without wanting to spoil the fun, get set for some X-rated dessert.

Voodoo Blues is popping up on several dates in April and May. Check the schedule here.
