London Capital Club Pop-Up ★★★★★
Wondering where to eat lunch in the city? Capital Pop Ups take over The Walbrook Grill with a menu curated by Indian chef Cyrus Todiwala.
The London Capital Club on Abchurch Lane has just kicked off its Capital Pop Up series, in which top London-based and international chefs will take over the Club’s Walbrook Grill kitchens for three months at a time. Kicking off the Club’s newest venture is Cyrus Todiwala OBE, acclaimed restauranteur and celebrity TV chef, who you may have seen in 2013’s The Incredible Spice Men. With the relative shortage of Indian restaurants near Bank station, London city-folk will undoubtedly welcome this temporary addition to East London's culinary scene.
Proprietor of three of London’s premier Indian (and Indian-fusion) eateries, including his flagship Cafe Spice Namaste, now into its 20th year, Todiwala brings a menu that mixes Indian staples like Tikka and Bhael Poori (puffed rice with tamarind) with his own innovations, including a delicious and tender tandoori duck sausage and the curiously named Squid Dynamite Peri-Peri.
Dishes are served up with a selection of traditional accompaniments, while desserts showcase Goan and Portuguese influence – including Bibinca buttermilk and nutmeg pancake and creme brulée with cardamom, ginger and saffron as well as a selection of Indian kulfis – fragrant flavoured ice-creams.
Whilst certain of Todiwala's offerings lack punch – the Daal in particular was somewhat disappointing – those more unusual offerings are masterfully done: the chef's signature tandoori duck sausage is rich and flavoursome, and the paneer is textured and served with a rich and spicy curry sauce.
They've just opened, so you're unlikely have trouble getting a table – and the traditional surrounds of the Capital Club make for a luxurious feasting atmosphere – appropriate since you're likely leave feeling very sated indeed. For those who are stuck for places to eat lunch near Bank Station, the club offers welcome respite from the city bustle.
Whilst Todiwala and his team will be offering regular dinner service only twice a week (alongside daily lunch service), there is also a selection of one-off ticketed events throughout the course of the run. Look for news on their twitter feed.
