Donostia Social Club, Clapham
At the King & Co., Clapham, Donostia Social Club are rustling up some of the best pintxos in London.
Spanish street-food favourites, Donostia Social Club, have taken up residence at the newly opened pub, The King & Co., in Clapham. The opening is good news for any fans of Basque cuisine; as their name might suggest (Donostia is the Basque name for gastronomic heaven San Sebastián) the menu seeks to serve London the finest cooking from this northern region of Spain.
No longer confined to their bright blue van, the Donostia team serve daily specials from midday, with a delicious array of pintxos - the Basque take on tapas - also on offer. Designed for sharing, dishes include seared scallops, sobrasada toast and honey, Padrón peppers and soft pork belly.
The independently run pub itself looks like it might be set to become a new favourite too. The menu feature a seasonal array of craft beers and ales, and the impressive selection even introduced us to Hitachino Nest White, a strong Japanese witbier with a delightful orange owl on its label.
If you are coming from north of the river, then the Sunday sharing roast with a Spanish twist looks well worth the journey, and can be accompanied by a hearty walk on the nearby common after. With a menu including Iberico ham and date stuffed pork loin and fondant potato, and lamb with pureed broccoli, reaching a decision about what to order might prove your biggest challenge.
