Food Through the Ages, The Geffrye Museum
A charming pop up experience: London 2014 is treated to a century-hopping feast.
This month, the Geffrye Museum is offering the chance to take a journey back in gastronomic time. The charming little Shoreditch museum, which dedicates itself to the history of the English domestic interior, will use its unique period settings to play host to a supper club, Food Through the Ages.
The supper, which has been carefully devised by acclaimed chef Matthew Phelps from Funthyme Dining, and food historian, Kate Colquhoun, will treat diners to dishes from the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are particularly looking forward to the opportunity to sample Salmagundi, a seventeenth century salad typically comprising cooked meats, seafood, fruit and vegetables, and purportedly enjoyed on pirate ships.
For Colquhoun, food is the key to understanding society’s shared past, and the daily lives of previous generations. In her popular work Taste: The Story of Britain Through Its Cooking, she pays homage to Britain’s rich history of food, from Anglo Saxon feasting, to the favoured recipes of the Regency era. Before each course, she will introduce the dishes about to be served with morsels of culinary history.
Throughout Colquhoun’s study, the importance of the home remains constant. Be sure to make time during your evening to explore the museum’s many rooms, which feature domestic interior design from 1600 to the present day.
