Argentinian Pizza Supperclub, Old Street

With 25 million Argentines of Italian origin, it is no surprise that pizza is so entrenched in the national cuisine, yet it remains in a large shadow, cast by bloody steak and empanadas.

The Argentinian Pizza Supperclub in Shoreditch aims to share the South American twists to Italy’s beloved dish.

Executed entirely by one Argentine expat, named Oli, this supper club offers three courses of homemade food, starting with antipasto before moving on to pizza, and finishing with a dessert of pancakes with dulce de leche. Half a bottle of red Argentine wine is thrown into the mix to complete the authenticity of the meal.

The pizza on offer is fugazzeta; a pizza dough, stuffed with mozzarella cheese, with caramelised onions, oregano and olive oil on top. Placed on top of this is faina, a flat bread, made from chickpea flour, that is traditionally served on top of mozzarella pizza as ‘pizza a caballo’ (literally translating as ‘horseback pizza’). While Oli isn’t juggling all the front and back-of-house roles, he finds time to entertain his guests with traditional Argentine music, which he performs himself.
