The National Café, casual all day restaurant

Peyton & Byrne restaurant group has acquired the ground floor café at The National Gallery, which serves great British ingredients in a stately setting

The National Café, casual all day restaurant
Peyton & Byrne, which runs restaurants at the Royal Academy, Imperial War Museum and the ICA, have reopened the iconic ground floor café at the National Gallery.

Closed for two months, the revamped look, by Paris-based designer Ramy Fischler, is a stirring mix of classical and modern; the gallery's towering windows light up the carpeted dining room, which has simpler furnishings and banquettes in sea blue.

The menu, from Oliver Peyton of Peyton & Byrne, and the café's executive chef Richard Oxley, makes the most of British ingredients but feels inspired by London's culinary diversity. So there's Cornish squid with puntarella and Sicillian lemon, duck with pistachio terrine and blood orange, and Galician bavette steak with datterino tomatoes and gremolata.

A seasonally adaptive bar menu with snacks (around £9) has been designed for pre-theatre, or gallery visitors in need of revivification with one of a list of refined cocktails.

The café promotes casual dining, so there's a grab-and-go bar that runs from breakfast through to dinner, as well as the opportunity for post-work cocktails if you aren't visiting the gallery.
