Gunpowder is where many of London's best chefs eat. The award-winning Indian small-plate bolthole in Spitalfields has turned heads for a few years, and now it's emerged that its owners are to launch a similarly teeny-tiny high-spec restaurant around the corner, Madame D's, on Commercial Street.
The owners' new restaurant has an interesting focus – the food of the Himalayas, which, in practical terms, means food from India, China, Tibet and Nepal. We're familiar with half of that, but the less familiar dishes will be the talking points, including (on the early menu) a pan-fried Tibetan duck, garlic coriander steamed chicken and a prawn toast that's been reimagined for a curiosity-hungry audience.
Like Gunpowder, there are around 20 seats, and communal dining is encouraged – so we'd expect the atmosphere to be unfussy, and the cooking to be home-style, in the new tradition, as we're seeing at openings like Darjeeling Express.
Although yet to be confirmed, it's likely the restaurant will serve without reservations, as at Gunpowder, so the usual rules about going early (or late) to avoid the queues will apply.
Many of the finer details have been kept under wraps, probably because the owners know this launch will gather its own momentum from the controlled explosion of Gunpowder. We'll update when we hear the finer details.
