English fashion designer Henry Holland talks design at the V&A Lydia and Manfred Gorky Lecture Hall for a fun evening that should put a smile on even the poutiest model's face.
Holland is a journalist graduate who fell into the fash-pack by accident, got lost in the Narnia wardrobe and never came out again. He's continued to delight since his inaugural 07/08 Autumn collection of cheeky slogan t-shirts that shouted to the world jingles such as “show them who’s boss, Kate Moss.”
Holland launched a menswear collection last year. This season it offered a sparkly blue, self-referencing t-shirt: “good thing this t-shirt is sparkly cause this party is super dull”.
He will discuss a new foray into interiors that’ll liven up your living room. The collaboration is with another high street name, Habitat, and it looks bold: tropical prints and one pillow inspired by a puffer fish. That’ll show ’em, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
Holland’s character is as colourful as his prints and he should provide some entertaining soundbites. In an interview with Glamour he professed to have agreed to the Habitat collaboration on a dance floor: “I’ve agreed to many a thing while dancing: it’s a bit of a habit”.
Holland is continuing on from where Bella Freud left off at her evening talk in May, adding to the V&A’s roster of good speakers.
London’s best art and design museum is a fitting platform for Holland to talk about how the capital continues to inspire his irreverent creations. Londoners, you have only yourself to blame for print mash-ups and coloured fur.
