Innovative designer, Hussein Chalayan boutique opening in Bourdon Street
Hussein Chalayan is far from your average fashion designer. Famous as the creative who gave the fashion world great leaps in technological innovation: from his explosive 1993 graduate collection, in which buried silk gowns resurrected themselves from the ground, to his wooden 'coffee table dresses' that double as both outfit and furniture, Chalayan's is often said to be as visionary and innovative as his Central Saint Martins contemporary, Alexander McQueen. This autumn, in true anti-conformist style, Chalayan's clothes will be modelled on the backs of dancers at Sadler's Wells.
Because Hussein Chalayan, a "designer's designer", and believes that the clothes should speak for themselves, he has previously forgone investment and so been unable to afford to launch a Chalayan boutique, until now.
Chalayan's new mews house on Mayfair's Bourdon Street is nestled alongside trendy art galleries and the boutiques of fellow fashion high-fliers, including Christopher Kane, Erem and JW Anderson's Loewe. Embracing the unorthodox nature of its name-sake, however, the Chalayan store will feature dramatic art installations, brand nights, screenings of Chalayan's films as well as a host of dinners and, of course, clothes.
Don't be scared away by Chalayan's technological and artistic experimentation. The boundary-pushing designs that gave us Lady Gaga's futuristic womb at the 2011 Grammys, go hand-in-hand with Chalayan's calmer, feminine outfits - the kind that don't rise out of the earth on their own accord - and have graced the back of many a celebrity including Sophie Turner and Marion Cotillard. This new boutique is all part of a plan to become accessible to "more women". Get down to Bourdon Street in July, to make sure that that woman is you.
