Chanel Cruise 2020 Show

Virginie Viard's first solo collection marks a new era for Chanel, away from the glitz and bling of times past

Chanel Cruise 2020 Grand Palais
The Grand Palais in Paris, transformed into a minimalist and sober-toned train station to house Chanel's Cruise 2019/20 show, is evocative of a new departure.

When models enter the immense space – filled with sound designer Michel Gaubert’s magistral sound-style – everything suddenly makes sense, and emotion runs high among the gathered fashion literati.

It is Chanel back to its essential core, and all the codes are there: the androgynous silhouette, the tweed, the bi-colour shoes, the sensuality and the movement.

It is fast paced, at times vaporous, at times highly structured. Long frilled dresses, tweed jackets paired with shorts, fluorescent bags contrasting khaki trench coats, light sensuous summer frocks and big knits. 'Très beau', we hear murmured.

After Karl Lagerfeld, Virginie Viard is quietly drawing Chanel's first chapter with humility and absolute elegance.
