Shakespeare's tragedy, written around 1603, has been given a contemporary spin by director Richard Twyman. This production has been billed 'a startling new interpretation', but will keep the heart of Shakespeare's drama intact: a man driven mad by jealousy and manipulated by his friend into an unspeakable act.
In this modern take, a Muslim general helps an unnamed Western colonial power in the face of a Turkish invasion, before his world is torn apart by jealousy and racism.
In a year when Turkey is rarely out of the newspapers, this production is pertinent – setting it in an 'unnamed' Western power makes the play ripe for satirising current events. RADA graduate Abraham Popoola is Othello, and at 6'5" he'll cut an imposing figure on stage. Leading classical light Mark Lockyer is notorious Iago, and Norah Lopez Holden, previously a fine Perdita and Cleopatra, is Othello's beloved Desdemona.
This version is a Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory production, with Tobacco Factory Theatres and English Touring Theatre.
