Waiting for Godot, Arcola Theatre
Comedians Totally Tom take on Estragon and Vladimir in this re-imagined version of Beckett's play...
Witness Beckett anew, as Edinburgh Fringe favourites Totally Tom (Toms Stourton and Palmer) bring a twist to Waiting for Godot.
The young comedians, best known for their satires and viral videos (including posh-boy spoof High Renaissance Man), are perhaps an unlikely pairing to gain permission from Beckett’s notoriously choosy estate.
Their director, Simon Dormandy, has extensive theatrical experience, having worked in classical theatre with the RSC and modern farce with Cheek by Jowl and, perhaps notably, he taught Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston and Harry Lloyd while at teacher at Totally Tom's alma mater, Eton College.
This re-imagining really shouldn’t work. Yet we have a suspicion that it shall, rather well. Absurdist theatre, of which Beckett is arguably the king, should be just that – absurd. The casting of two comedians at the centre of a play that is too often too serious is a stroke of off-the-cuff genius. Totally Tom' s keenly-conceived comedy will elevate, isolate and illuminate areas of Beckett's text which, if treated too reverently, becomes impenetrable.
On their website,Totally Tom claim, "if you were to mix the friendship of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley and the sexual tension of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley you’d get something close to Totally Tom". It's just that strange mix of chemistry that'll hopefully make this adaptation a hit.
