The play explores adolescence through a series of flashbacks, narrated by its central character, to the driving lessons given to her by her uncle. And the narrative these memories builds is unsettling, raw, and at times hilarious.
Heading up the cast is Olivia Poulet. Best known to most for The Thick of It and Sherlock, Poulet is hot property in London theatre and provides this production with a dash of star quality.
Coming off the back of A First World problem, a punchy, pithy boarding school comedy that impressed up at Theatre 503 last year, How I Learned to Drive marks a step into the big leagues for young theatre company Fools and Kings. It is not a play that makes for easy viewing – themes of manipulation, sexism and paedophilia run throughout, but if handled with the requisite grace and creativity, could be the start of big things for Fools and Kings.
