The how to: Academy has been answering tricky questions since their launch last year (including how to: sell anything, read Chekhov, master cryptic crosswords and perform magic). New event Cultural Quarterly will now turn a hand to pre-empting the questions, by introducing the most important events in the London art scene. Involving several London influentials, looking both within and outside of their own fields, they plan to span must-see and niche events on the national and international stage. This first evening, co-curated by Sarah Douglas, will focus on visual arts events (London), but future Quarterlys will address themes from the full cultural spectrum.

Art critic and artist Matthew Collings will be discussing the groundbreaking work of Russian artist Kazimir Malevich. Given Collings’ history of documentaries piercing the world of contemporary art, including the Channel 4 BAFTA winner This Is Modern Art , we can pretty much guarantee a witty and insightful, but never over-complicated, view of Malevich and his work.

The presence of the Royal Academy will throw some impressive weight behind proceedings, with Kathleen Soriano, curator of the RA’s upcoming Anselm Kiefer retrospective, delving into Kiefer’s tumultuous paint and influence on contemporary art, and Eliza Bonham Carter, head of the Royal Academy Schools, guiding participants through the exhibition of this year’s graduating students. Listen carefully - this is the artistic landscape of the future.

Lastly artist and author Natalie Hambro will add a fresh and trendy twist, looking at upcoming small-scale happenings, exhibitions and pop-ups.

Cultural Quarterly is to become a regular event, highlighting the big news of each season, and this launch looks set to go off with a typically well-informed bang.
