Circles, Tricycle Theatre
This fresh new play from award-winning playwright Rachel De-lahay captures a cycle of violence that spans three generations.
This fresh new play from award-winning playwright Rachel De-lahay captures a cycle of violence that spans three generations and explores how destructive patterns can be broken. A pair of teenagers meet on the bus and develop an unexpected friendship. A woman is caught in a violent relationship. The stories entwine, intensified by the backdrop of an ever-changing city.
De-lahay has shown herself to be a vibrant ventriloquist of controversial issues including race, riots and immigration. In this latest work she turns her creativity to an edgy and arresting exploration of violence on young women.
With the Evening Standard’s Most Promising Playwright Award and a Screen International Star of Tomorrow award (for a debut film script that’s being developed by Film4) to her name, De-lahy is one of the buzziest and most exciting playwrights writing at the moment. She has established a reputation for fresh and contemporary dialogue that accurately captures the speech of the streets. Her debut play Westbridge explored the social media-saturated experience of the London riots. In Circles she presents authentic communication more directly, with conversations detached from any distractions. Discussing the show, she describes how "The slang you hear in the play is the same slang that’s used in Handsworth, where I’m from. It’s not uniform."
Circles comes to Kilburn’s Tricycle Threatre fresh from a run at the Birmingham Rep and promises to be both thought-provoking and eye-opening viewing
