Winter Sun, King's Cross
Mr Blue Sky: new London pop-up event brings sunshine back into our lives with an installation, bar and social space themed on sunlight
If you can’t bare the wintry nights and dark mornings of the Christmas holidays, drink in a little bit of sun at the new Winter Sun pop up in Granary Square, King’s Cross.
The temporary structure by King’s Cross, designed by artists James Bowthorpe & Kim Coleman in collaboration with architect Andrew Lock, is a bar and social space designed as a refuge which embraces our need for light. At this innovative London design event there are twelve ‘suns’ which glow with varying degrees of natural light: from stark daylight to the soft radiance of daybreak. Everything in this installation is themed around the sun, from the décor and light-sensitive materials to the staff uniforms.
Bowthorpe and Coleman explain, ‘Humans used to celebrate mid-winter as the time of the year when the earth is furthest from the sun, anticipating its glorious return,” say the designers. “Winter Sun is a dose of man-made sun in the dark of winter.”
Of course there is another reason to visit - you’ll find hot and cold cocktails with locally-sourced ingredients; and traditional snacks like scotch eggs being served.
Open for just 8 weeks, pop along to this new construction to lift your spirits on dark Christmas afternoons, and take part in themed events like Sun Printing and Shadow Shape making.
